‘A gift of joy’ to seniors

The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center celebrated the holidays with music, dancing and presents during lunch on Dec. 16.
Executive Director Rachelle Dardeau and Director of Volunteer & Recreation Robin Clough expressed gratitude and wished everyone a meaningful holiday season, but the highlight of the day was a very special gift to the seniors.

Rebecca “Becky” Bunjac played Santa for the day. Bunjac believes that the spirit of Christmas extends outside of her family and friends, so she extended it amongst the seniors.

“After losing my mom from a long battle to cancer, the closest place to remember her by is by being with the seniors at the center,” Bunjac said.

In all, Bunjac raffled off 150 presents, including gift certificates she received at her 60th birthday party.

“I didn’t need any gifts, and all I can think of was giving seniors a gift of joy,” Bunjac said.

Bunjac is the coordinator of the Fil-Am Association’s “Dance With Me,” a monthly dance held every 3rd Saturday of every month at the center.

She is married to Jon Ian Bunjac and comes from a family of dignitaries. Bunjac is a granddaughter of former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Felixberto Serrano, who was the first Ambassador of the Philippines to the United Nations. She has three children: Ritchie Michael, Richard Mark, Elizabeth Asheley, and a daughter in law, Ana Vargas Reyes.

Bunjac is the first Filipino escrow officer in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles County, a real estate  agent and a notary public. Now semi-retired, she loves cooking and plans to volunteer in her church and at the senior center.

Her goal in life is to be able to establish a foundation for unwanted children, cancer patients, homeless people and seniors.
