I'm skeptical of what Obama will do

Well, the die has been cast. And, unlike many Democrats who revelled at our current president's problems and, hence, our country's as well, I sincerely hope our new president has success.

But I cannot help thinking that we are on the verge of a protracted socialist state.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind spreading the wealth - as long as I have a say as to how much I spread and to whom I spread it.

Alas, I do not think that is going to happen.

If my fears are not realized; if President Obama turns things around; if capitalism once again reigns supreme (flawed as it may be), then I will submit a subsequent letter congratulating him.

But I am haunted by what I believe to be true: You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot build character by taking away initiative and independence.

You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

Our strength as a nation lies in common, shared ideals, not hyphens and differences.

Diversity does not make us strong; our strength allows diversity.

And, although you cannot always be judged by the company you keep, you can be judged on the actions of the company you kept.

Good luck, President-Elect Obama.

And now if you will excuse me, I am going to try to find a good hiding place for my pie.
