Santa Clarita residents are one step closer to seeing a new park-and-ride center and expansion of the McBean Regional Transit Station after Santa Clarita City Council members approved a design contract this week.

The 285-space park-and-ride will be located on Valencia Boulevard near the current transit center and will include five new bus canopies, landscape enhancements, low-impact site lighting, public art installations and transit operation service features, according to a report from the city officials.

The project will be financed with $4.7 million in federal and local funds through a Metropolitan Transportation Authority grant and an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant, according to the report.

The funds can be used for preparing environmental documents, design, construction engineering supports and construction of the park-and-ride lot.

The $331,995 design contract was awarded to Tetra Tech Inc. of Irvine, according to the report. Tetra Tech has suggested adding detention basins, permeable pavement and landscape elements designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water.
