If you look closely, things might look a little different on some high school soccer fields next season. There will be a few changes to high school soccer rules next season.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, which establishes rules for high school soccer, three new rules have been adopted for the 2012-2013 soccer season.

The most impactful of these rules is the elimination of a “soft red” card.

A red card is considered a “soft red” when it is given due to a player receiving two yellow cards in a game, rather than a straight red card.

In the past, a coach was allowed to substitute for a player who was disqualified due to receiving two yellow cards.

Under the new rules of play, a team which has a player eliminated due to receiving two yellow cards in the game will have to play down a player -- the coach can no longer substitute for said player.

Other rules that have been changed include the procedure of disqualifying a player who deliberately uses his or her hands in the box to stop a goal from scoring.

In the past, this player would be automatically disqualified. Now, the play will only receive this punishment if he or she successfully stops the goal from scoring. If the player fails to stop the goal, he or she will simply receive a caution.

Lastly, the organization approved procedures for retaking penalty kicks when a disruption in play occurs after the kick has been legally taken but before it has been legally touched by another player, a posts or crossbar.

This is highly unlikely to occur, but in the past it would result in a drop ball. Now, the player will be allowed to rekick the penalty.
