Obama’s promises

On Nov. 4, 2008, American voters cast their ballots for Barack Obama based on image and promises.

On the one hand, voting for Obama was voting for a comrade of the same color or mix, a college-educated black man, and a person with a nontraditional upbringing.

He is a man who has an appeal to the "underdog" - a man who has a commonality with the common voter and a new vision for America as one who rose above that label.

On the other hand, his image doesn't necessarily translate into having the best interest of the voter as his primary vision.

For example, how does abortion at any level of a baby's development benefit our economy or the hypocrisy it speaks of when prisons harbor murderers but not abortionists or their patients?

Obama has not only attracted voters across the spectrum of color but reached the interest of the very young voter, as well.

Hopefully, they voted beyond Obama's image by using the critical thinking skills that are needed to judge his character, past Senate record, present facts, and future promises.

Unfortunately, as Americans, we are bombarded daily by images which have a way of eroding our ability to critically judge a polished look and practiced speech.

Our emotions are constantly being fine-tuned by well-planned advertising to sell us an idea. The "sell" is to introduce and reintroduce an ideology that serves a purpose for an end result.

This is true, for example, with television media. Whatever that idea may be will eventually become part of a person's way of seeing the world and what is unquestionably accepted.

This writer hopes that President-elect Obama and staff will, with the Democratic Congress, make decisions that will benefit all Americans.
