West Ranch boys soccer was tied with Valencia with five minutes left in the last Foothill League game of the season.
Both teams knew West Ranch would win the Foothill League with a victory.

That’s when Brandon Dooley came through, scoring the winning goal to beat Valencia 2-1 on Feb. 10.

For the second straight season, West Ranch boys soccer won the Foothill League title after needing a win in the last game of the regular season.

And it all led to the league’s coaches voting Dooley as the 2011-12 Foothill Player of the Year.

“I definitely had a great year this year and the team did really well, but league MVP wasn’t really a thought in my mind,” Dooley said. “But I’m just happy that I am and I’ll take it as it comes.”

Dooley was a constant scoring threat for West Ranch, scoring nine goals, and he worked well with teammate Chris Tumasone to apply pressure on opposing defenses.

“He was instrumental is every attacking thing that we did, whether it was his goals, Chris’ goals or anybody else’s goals,” said West Ranch head coach Fred McGinn.

Tumasone, also a senior, was selected first-team all-league along with two other teammates in senior midfielder Aaron Gonzalez and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Manzo.

Manzo was one of two goalkeepers on the first team, joining Saugus senior Justin Socarras.

Junior forward Brian Perez was Saugus’ other first-teamer. He was one of the league’s top scorers playing at the varsity level for his third year in a row.

League second-place Hart was the only other team with three players represented on the first team.

The Hart players honored were senior defenders Cole Lambert and Ryan Dolan, along with senior forward Sammy Reyes.

Valencia’s first-team nods included varsity newcomer and forward junior Jesus Fernandez and do-everything senior midfielder Michael Fischbach.

Due to several forfeits for using an ineligible player during league play, Canyon ended up fifth place in league and had just one player on the first team, defender Alex Prince.

Golden Valley’s lone first-teamer was senior midfielder Guy Myers.

All six teams had two players apiece on the second team. West Ranch senior Brett Karson and junior Wade McMillon made the team, along with Hart juniors Gabe Robinson and Nico Ferrero. They were joined by Saugus juniors Zach Nua and Jordan Pacheco, Valencia seniors Garrett McPheeters and Thomas Pugliese, Golden Valley seniors Fernando Lauchu and Devin Forbes and Canyon seniors Jorge Navarro and A.J. Rochow.

The honorable mentions included Canyon senior Zach Jens, Golden Valley junior Grant Effeldt, Hart sophomore Brayon Rodriguez, Saugus senior Michael St. Amand, Valencia junior Gino Ferraro and West Ranch sophomore Zackary Sage.
