Database lists film property, talent

A local director has built an online database of property, car and talent options for TV and film and wants to make Santa Clarita the first fully represented community.

Tom Smith began Film It USA last summer as a response to the lack of comprehensive databases for locations, extras and cars available to sets in specific communities.

People pay $25 a year to post up to three properties, five cars and five talents to the website, which production companies can browse for free upon registering. The intent is to make each account represent a family, since, for example, a family of five could have multiple properties, vehicles and people to post on the site under one account.

Smith, who primarily works in TV and commercials, first started as a web database for picture cars, but, as of last year, expanded the site to include properties and talent, creating He is a one-man staff that designed and maintains the website himself.

The current listings are peppered over the country, he said. But as a Santa Clarita resident for the last nine years, Smith wants Santa Clarita to be the first comprehensive community on the database, and is trying to find local partners to help create many listings to show that it is a film-friendly area.

The partnership program is mainly how Smith wants to market the website to potential posters. When companies are filming in a new town, he said, they tend to head to the nonprofits to request help in finding find properties and extras for the set quickly and cheaply.

In the same way, Smith wants to partner with nonprofits so that the organizations can refer posters, and then the nonprofits would receive a portion of the posting fee.

Smith is in talks with some local nonprofits but nothing is finalized. Once the database for Santa Clarita grows, he plans to take the same approach in other regions.

“There’s always strength in numbers if I can market it to a community rather than to an individual,” Smith said. “As a community builds a database, that database becomes more attractive for filmmakers.”

Film It USA is located at 25852 McBean Parkway, #1101, Valencia and can be reached at (661) 456-8519. More information is available online at
