Crews are removing a small portion of the Saugus Speedway stands today in an effort to free up performance space during the regular Swap Meets, Operations Manager Jorge Jimenez said.

A small section of stands about 20 feet by 15 feet near Soledad Canyon Road is being taken down to offer more room for bands and performers that take stage during Swap Meets held at the Saugus Speedway on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

"We're not taking all of them down," Jimenez said.

There are currently no plans to take down any other parts of the stands because they offer a nostalgic look for the area, he said.

During the 1950s, the quarter-mile paved track at the speedway offered stock car races through the mid-1990s.

While the stock car races have ended, the weekly Swap Meets give the local community access to vendors, merchandise, food and entertainment.
