Maurice "Maury" Doty was the type of man who never met a stranger, according to his family.

Maury Doty was the first Associated Student Body President of William S. Hart High School and graduated in the school's first class in 1949.

He died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Nipomo, Calif., family members said Friday. He was 81.

After he graduated from the Santa Clarita Valley's first high school, Maury Doty attended college for one year before joining the United States Air Force from 1951-1955.

His niece and goddaughter, Genene Staats of Agua Dulce, said she remembers living in Newhall as a 6-year-old at the time, and she would run out of her house every time a plane flew overhead, thinking her uncle was coming home.

"Whenever I would hear an airplane fly over, I would run outside and wave my arms in the air saying, ‘Hi Uncle Maury,'" Staats said Friday.

After he completed his service, Maury Doty married William S. Hart High School Homecoming Queen Carole Ayers in 1956, and the couple settled in Newhall.

Maury Doty worked as an automobile salesman and sales manager for Ford in Newhall for several years. The couple had seven children before the family moved to Nipomo.

Carole Ayers Doty said her husband was very generous and helped many people throughout the years without them even knowing. The couple was married 56 years.

One of his favorite things was to make up little phrases, Carole Ayers Doty said.

"He had these little quips," she said in a phone interview, adding that her sons and daughters have remembered about 150 so far. "At the appropriate time, he would pull them out."

She said one of her favorites was: "If it's a contest, you win."

Maury Doty was nicknamed "Coach" in Nipomo after visiting the local steak house there on a daily basis.

"The only people who weren't his friends were the people he hadn't met yet," said Dominic Doty, son of Carole and Maury Doty.

Maury Doty is survived by his wife, Carole Doty; children Tony, Rick, Lori, Dominic, Lisa Marie and Mike; seven grandchildren; his brother Gene; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A son, Philip, preceded him in death.
Services were scheduled at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Nipomo on March 22 and 23.
