The College of the Canyons men’s ice hockey team finished seventh at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III National Tournament this past week.

The Cougars fell in their opening game on Wednesday, falling 8-2 to eventual national runner-up Davenport University of Michigan. They rebounded to beat Robert Morris (Pa.) 9-6 on Thursday and Central Florida 7-6 in overtime on Friday.

Because of the opening loss, COC finished second in Pool A and didn’t qualify for the national semifinals, which took place on Saturday. The Adrian College (Mich.) Gold team beat Davenport in the national championship 4-2.

Canyons finished seventh in the final national rankings, released after the tournament ended. The Cougars won the national championship for the first time in program history last season, and they finished 14th in 2009 and fifth in 2010.

Sophomore forward Brian Voogt was the lone all-tournament selection for COC, making the second team.
