College of the Canyons sophomore runner Chris Low has committed to Long Beach State.

Low, the defending California Community College Athletic Association state champion in the 800-meter race, confirmed to The Signal that he had signed with the 49ers on Thursday.

The Canyon High graduate, who only started running track in the spring of 2010, is making a run at the Santa Clarita Valley record in the 800 this season. He ran a time of 1 minute, 50.30 seconds on March 16 at the Cal Relays, which is a little more than a second shy of Hart graduate Chuck Kirkby’s time of 1:49.06, set in 1955 while he ran for Mt. San Antonio College.

Low will take part in this weekend’s Stanford Invitational, to which he received an at-large qualification thanks to his 800 time from March 16. Low is also running the 400, 1,500 and relays for the Cougars, who have won the past two Western State Conference meets and finished second in the WSC last season.

Low had originally targeted a scholarship to UCLA, but he said that he felt more comfortable at Long Beach State. Additionally, the school offered his preferred major of criminal justice, while UCLA did not.
