Fifth-graders at Mitchell Community School spent March 30 in a celebration of Colonial Day.

The hands-on experience allowed the students to become immersed into the colonial times of American history by doing activities that were common then.

The students spent their time learning about what life was like hundreds of years ago by doing activities like papermaking, writing in a horn book with feathers and ink, stitchery, making butter, creating clay pinch pots and paper quilling.

The students also played some popular colonial games that children back then would have played, such as, tops, Bilbo Catchers and marbles. Mitchell students also learned a dance, sang songs and ate a colonial-style meal.
