Only one team walked away victorious, but in the end, it was a win-win when the Canyon and Golden Valley swim teams met Wednesday at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

The Canyon girls ran away with a 131-39 victory, while the boys team beat the Grizzlies 99-71 for its first league win of the season.

It was the closest league dual-meet result Golden Valley head coach Jenn Marsden could remember for her school, and another sign that Golden Valley is continuing to grow as a program.

For the Cowboys, some impressive results bode well ahead of Tuesday’s Foothill League prelims.

“We did well. It’s a good indication of what might happen next week,” said Canyon head coach Steve Himes.

Matt Howard doubled in the 100 butterfly (56.11) and 500 free (5:00.73) to lead the Canyon boys (3-5 overall, 1-4 Foothill League).

“My boys are going to do well (next week),” Himes said. “I’m really excited. We’re going to do well at prelims and finals, that’s our goal.”

For Golden Valley, the boys (1-6, 0-5) achieved a quality results from Timothy Lee, who won the 50 free in 23.38, sophomore Hunter Kincheloe, who finished the 500 free in 5:48.21, and Gerardo San Jose, who won the 100 back in 1:03.85.

“That was the closest that it’s been as far as I’m aware in school history,” Marsden said of the final score. “It’s a big deal to hold them under 100.”

The Canyon girls (5-3, 2-3) swept the meet’s 11 events, taking first and second in nine.

Shayla Austin went back-to-back in the 50 free (25.17 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1 minute, 01.69 seconds).

Amber Wyatt doubled in the 100 free (1:00.56) and 100 backstroke (1:06.33).

For Golden Valley (1-6, 0-5), Cassandra Kutra-Undi took second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.43 and the 200-free relay team of Suji Yeon, Nandi Moore, Daniela Garcia and Kutra-Undi came in second in 1:59.54.
