Foothill League track and field: Hart boys clinch share of title

Indians' championship is first since 2008; Saugus and Valencia girls also win

The Hart boys clinched a share of their first Foothill League title since 2008 with an 82-54 victory over Valencia on Thursday.

“I didn’t foresee this at all. At the beginning of the season, I told the kids, ‘You have a good team and a chance to go far,’” said first-year head coach Gio Guzman, who also called his coaching staff the “backbone” of the program.

Hart’s Austin O’Neil continued his dominance in the 1,600 with a time of 4:27, while Sam Peckham won the 3,200 in 9:48.

Riley Stauffer won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles to lead Hart sweeps in both events, while Tim White won the long jump and triple jump.

For Valencia, Clint Gingrich won the 400 in 50.8 seconds and was part of both winning relays, including the 4x100 (43.1 seconds) and the 4x400 (3:30.6).

Gingrich was also second in the long jump at 20-11.

James Berkley was also part of the 4x100 relay team, and he won the 100 in 10.8 seconds and the 200 in 22.2 seconds.

Hart finished 4-1 in the Foothill League, with the lone loss coming to Canyon in the league opener. The Valencia boys wound up 1-4.

Saugus 68, West Ranch 68

Cameron Engle had a big day for the Saugus boys. He won the high jump (6-0), the long jump (20-11) and the 110 hurdles (16.4 seconds), and he also finished second in the triple jump at 40-8.

Jeremy Gatewood ran the 100 in 10.88 seconds hand-timed, the fastest time in the Foothill League this season. A.J. Yarnall doubled to win the 1,600 in 4:32.59 and the 3,200 in 10:10.16.

The Centurions finish the league season at 1-3-1, while West Ranch winds up at 0-4-1.

Girls Track and Field
Valencia 96, Hart 38

Chanel Rogers won the 100 in 12.2 seconds and the 200 in 25.2 seconds for the Vikings, and she was also part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 teams.

The 4x100 team ran the race in 49.5 seconds, and the 4x400 team finished in 4:10.6.

Jennifer Anumba was also part of both victorious relays, and she won the triple jump with a mark of 34-7 1/2. Preea Johnson won the shot put at 31-7 and finished second at 69-5 1/2.

Maddie Dignadice also raced to victory in the 3,200 with a time of 11:30, and she was second in the 1,600 at 5:18.

Valencia wound up 2-3 in the Foothill League, and Hart finished at 0-5.

Saugus 73, West Ranch 63

The Saugus girls track and field team defeated West Ranch 73-63 on Thursday, while the boys teams tied 68-68 at West Ranch High School.

Karis Frankian won the 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600 for the Centurions, while Jenna Mears won the 100 hurdles and finished second in the 300 hurdles.

Chelsea Alpern did the reverse for the Centurions, winning the 300 hurdles and finishing second in the 100 hurdles.

For West Ranch, Ashley Welker won both the 400 in 58.3 seconds and the 800 in 2:18. Her younger sister Taylor won the 1,600.

Saugus finishes 3-2 in league, and West Ranch is 1-4.
