College of the Canyons head softball coach John Wissmath has been named the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and three of his players have been selected All-State according to a press release sent out on Monday.

Those three players include sophomore infielder Ruby Herrera, sophomore catcher Amy Droege and freshman pitcher Kimmie Lockhart.

Herrera leads the team with a .496 batting average, 67 hits, 59 runs, 34 extra-base hits and 24 walks. Droege, a West Ranch High graduate, is batting .431 and is second on the team with eight home runs and 45 RBIs.

Lockhart, a former Saugus High player, has put together a 21-1 record in the circle with a 2.97 ERA over 129 1/3 innings pitched.

This marks the first time Wissmath has been named state Coach of the Year. In his fifth season as head coach at COC, he’s led the Cougars to a 37-2-1 record, a Western State Conference, Blue Division championship and the No. 1 seed in the Southern California Regionals.

Canyons takes on Santa Barbara in the first round of the SoCal Regionals in a three-game series, with the first game scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at COC. The Cougars beat Santa Barbara 8-0 on Feb. 11 in the teams’ only meeting this season.
