Officials ready to build water storage

One of Santa Clarita Valley’s four water retailers is about to build a storage tank on the hills overlooking Newhall Ranch Road to ensure adequate amounts of water are stored evenly across the valley, officials said Tuesday.

The Santa Clarita Water Division received the green light from the Castaic Lake Water Agency this week to start building a storage tank capable of holding 3.75 million gallons of water.

The water retailer is a subsidiary of the agency.

Construction of the Mesa Tank is expected to begin in August and take about a year to complete, Retail Manager Mauricio Guardado Jr said Tuesday.

“This project was identified as part of the (2008) Water Master Plan and was intended to resolve storage deficiencies in one of the zones,” Guardado said.

Ensuring adequate amounts of water are stored inside the zone would help bolster the area against wildfires by making sure ample amounts of water are available there for fighting fires.

The master plan identified an area inside Saugus called the Catala Pressure Zone and noted the Mesa Tank would improve fire protection, emergency preparedness, public safety and water supply management.

The Mesa Tank is expected to be 170-feet in diameter — wider than half a football field — and hold water 22 feet deep, enough to fill about 375,000 bath tubs. The tank is to be built on a hill near the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant, out of public sight and just east of the water agency’s conservation garden, about 1,500 feet north of Newhall Ranch Road.

On Monday, board members on the agency’s Retail Operations Committee approved the project and adopted a study showing it would not harm the environment.

The public is invited to attend a meeting on the Mesa Tank project at 7 p.m. on May 16 at the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant.
