After finishing as Foothill League boys volleyball champions with a perfect 10-0 run through league play, Valencia became the league’s only team to earn a home match in the first round of the playoffs this year.

The 2012 CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets were released on Saturday, and as expected, three Foothill League teams are included in the Division II bracket.

West Ranch and Saugus will join Valencia in the postseason, but both will hit the road in the opening round.

The Vikings (17-13) enter as the No. 4 seed in the bracket, where it will host Pete Knight High of Palmdale in the first round.
Knight (6-9) is the fourth-place finisher out of the Golden League.

“Looking at the bracket, this team definitely has a chance to compete,” said Valencia head coach Kevin Kornegay. “It’s just going to be how they come together as senior class in this last stretch.”

Valencia has advanced to at least a CIF quarterfinal in each of the past 11 seasons, winning four CIF championships along the way. The last title came in 2008.

This year, the Vikings don’t have a potential matchup against a higher seed until the semifinal round, where they could face No. 1 seed Oak Park.

“We’ve been battle tested, so at least they know what’s about to come,” Kornegay said. “We’ve faced a lot of tougher teams (this season) than we even have a chance to face in this bracket.”

The Foothill’s second-place team, West Ranch, will travel to take on Righetti High of Santa Maria in the opening round.
Righetti finished 12-10 overall this season and took second in the Pac-7 League.

“It’s not an unlucky draw except for the fact that we’re playing on the road,” said West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks. “We’ve already played this team and we already beat them but we didn’t play very well.”

The Wildcats (19-9) beat Righetti 2-0 on March 3 during the Camarillo Tournament.

A third place finish in Foothill play lands Saugus (19-8-2) a road game against Pac-7 champion Arroyo Grande High (13-1).

All first-round games are scheduled for Tuesday with potential second-round matchups taking place on Thursday.
