The public is invited to weigh in on proposed sewer rate hikes Wednesday afternoon in Whittier.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District is holding a public hearing Wednesday beginning at 1:30 p.m. at its office in Whittier, 1955 Workman Mill Road.

Sewer rates for users across the Santa Clarita Valley are expected to increase by 7 percent next year, according to plans announced by officials at the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District.

Residents hooked up to the sewer system currently paying the normal single-family rate of $215 every year are expected to pay $231 for the same services in the 2012-13 fiscal year, according to the latest schedule drafted by the district's board of directors.

Before the rates are ratified, sanitation officials are first required to hear from the public about their plans.
