West Ranch boys volleyball is catching fire just in time.

And even after a less-than-perfect performance in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs, the Wildcats hung on to win the first playoff match in program history on Tuesday night in Santa Maria.

West Ranch beat Righetti 3-1 by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-27 and 25-20 behind 14 kills from Ben Davis and 12 from Dalton Peck.

The strong performances by the pair of outside hitters helped the Wildcats (20-9) overcome more than 30 hitting errors.

“They just had a lot of nerves today,” said West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks. “But they just wanted to do something that no other team in West Ranch history has done, and I think that was the difference. They wanted it so bad.”

It was the second time this season the Wildcats have taken down Righetti (12-11) after also winning 2-0 on March 3 in tournament play.

West Ranch went in with same mind set of trying to distribute the ball to its variety of offensive weapons.

It all started with senior setter Anthony Hanna, who finished with 57 assists.

“It was good to see the ball getting spread around more,” Sparks said.

Tanner Williams also turned in a 23-dig match on the defensive end for the Wildcats.

While playing from behind most of the day, the Warriors managed to rally back in every game, but fell short in all but the third.

Sparks had just one complaint in the match.

“We need to limit our unforced errors,” he said. Then he repeated it.

West Ranch will face either San Juan Hills or Beckman High in the second round at a location yet to be determined.
