In each of the past three seasons, Valencia’s boys volleyball season has ended in the CIF-Southern Section Division II quarterfinals.

The Vikings earned a return trip on Thursday. The way they’re playing, history might not repeat itself.

Led by a team-high 18 kills from Eric Ensing, Valencia swept Calvary Chapel 3-0 on the road in the CIF-SS Div. II second round.

The Vikings won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-16 to return to the CIF quarterfinals for the 12th straight season.

Thursday marked the second straight 3-0 playoff win for Valencia (19-13), but unlike Tuesday’s quick handling of Pete Knight, the Vikings kept their starters in the whole way.

“Our philosophy was we were going to go with the guys who are going to get us to a CIF title,” said head coach Kevin Kornegay. “We wanted our guys to be playing well.”

Kornegay said that Calvary Chapel came out fired up and had a big crowd behind them, but the Vikings responded. Austin Csiszar had seven kills and Mark Moss added six. Jake Ferry finished with 34 assists.

“We served them off the court,” Kornegay said. “They were never in system. Eric Ensing was off the hook good, which is what we need.”

Because of playoff pre-flips, Valencia will now host the quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. Saturday against either Irvine or Capistrano Valley.
