Facing elimination twice on Saturday afternoon in the California Community College Athletic Association Super Regional at College of the Canyons, the Cougars’ Adriana Correra hit her 21st home run of the season to help push COC to a 9-3 victory over Saddleback College in their first game, and Caitlyn Zimmerman saved the Cougars in their second game by driving in Shay Romero in the bottom of the sixth to score the eventual game winner in a 10-9 victory over Southwestern.

The two victories put the Cougars, who lost their opening game on Friday to Southwestern to enter the loser’s bracket, into the championship series with Riverside today.

Because of the double elimination format, the Cougars will have to defeat Riverside twice, while a single loss would send COC home for the season.

Alicia Paiz pitched both games on Saturday for the Cougars (41-3-1), going all seven innings in game one, allowing three earned runs off eight hits.

In the victory, over Southwestern Paiz was again in the circle, throwing seven innings, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.

With the victories, COC kept its hopes alive for a shot at advancing to the CCCAA Championship next week in Bakersfield.
Correra’s three-run shot against Saddleback came in the third inning and opened up the game’s scoring.

She went 3-for-4 with six RBIs in the game.

Against Southwestern, which defeated COC in the first game 7-5, Kimmie Lockhart turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 advantage with one swing of the bat.

But the Jaguars stormed back to tie the game at nine in the fifth before Zimmerman drove in the game winner.

Infielder Ruby Herrera went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI on the day, and right fielder Amy Droege was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
