LOS ANGELES (AP) - District Attorney Steve Cooley says he will seek grand jury indictments in the Los Angeles County assessor corruption investigation.

It was Cooley's first public comment in the expanding investigation of assessor John Noquez.

The investigation began last year and is focusing on possible tax breaks given to Noguez campaign contributors and would-be contributors.

Cooley told the Los Angeles Times ( on Tuesday that the probe has grown to include other public officials and private citizens.

He also says the union representing assessor's office workers has interfered with the investigation by ordering employees to refuse to cooperate without permission from Noguez's office.

Whoever issued the order, Cooley says, will likely be the first person summoned to testify before the county grand jury.
