Letter: Time to get California finances in order

When will Californians get fed up with the racketeering-style annual threats to slash basic government services, such as police and fire protection, and essential education (classroom teachers and professors), and vote the bums out of office?

Surprise — California once again projected overly optimistic tax revenues.

For the economically challenged minds in Sacramento, here’s some news: when the state loses 2 million jobs, is in a recession and losing businesses to other states, the result is a loss in tax revenues. Duh.

When you fail to cut unnecessary expenditures, such as the high-speed train, to nowhere or reduce costs of much-too-generous school administrator salaries, pensions, etc. a bad situation worsens.

The unenlightened argue that bonds or special funds are paying for pet projects. To those, I offer a simple example: a family has enough money for food or a vacation — which would they choose?

Leaving it to the current set of politicians, it would be that the family starves.

The Republicans drafted a pension reform bill to the exact wishes of Gov. Jerry Brown, but it’s stalled because the Democrats in the legislature are afraid to lose union monies for their re-elections. Well, let’s show them what we, the voters, think of this: Anyone who takes a dime from a public-employee union should not get a single vote. Vote for folks who promise to get the California house in order, to make real reform or resign in disgrace if they do not accomplish their mission.

It’s time we have a state proposition that totally bans all election contributions and any forms of advertising and all lobbyists. Those who are elected to public office have one responsibility and one only — to their represented constituents.
