The yuccas are in bloom. Those wonderful, huge stalks bursting with white flowers that look like popcorn are nearly everywhere. I recently drove from downtown Los Angeles to the Santa Clarita Valley along the Foothill Freeway and there were hundreds of yuccas in bloom along the route.

Annular solar eclipse
It's a rare event, the last one in the United States was in 1994 and the next won't be until 2023. The Local Group astronomy club in the SCV will be setting up telescopes for safe viewing of the annular solar eclipse today in Central Park, 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.

The eclipse begins at 5:25 p.m. in the SCV. The Griffith Observatory reports that we will experience only a partial eclipse - lasting from 5:25 to 7:42 p.m. The maximum eclipse will occur at 6:38 p.m., with the moon covering 86 percent of the sun's diameter and 79 percent of its area, leaving a only narrow crescent of bright sunlight.
The eclipse will be deep enough to make the afternoon unusually gloomy. Experts advise NEVER to look directly at the sun during an eclipse, eye damage can occur. However, The Local Group will have special "solar-safe" telescopes. For more info visit

Rock the Rhythm
Kudos to everyone involved in the Rock the Rhythm event held Friday in Cougar Stadium at College of the Canyons. I know a lot of blood, sweat (and maybe some tears) went into the effort. Good job, everyone.

Miss SCV Pageants
You still have time to compete in the Miss SCV Scholarship Pageant. Today is the deadline to apply for the pageant which will be held June 16 at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center. Contestants are being sought for ages 8 to adult with crowns going to Little Miss SCV, Miss Teen SCV, Miss SCV, Ms. SCV and Mrs. SCV. For more information visit or call 661-252-3232.
To purchase tickets to the pageant visit or call 661-362-5304.

Kudos to Dale Donohoe
Dale Donohoe of Intertex came through big time for the Boys & Girls Club of SCV this week. The club was searching for a location for its annual benefit auction - an indoor location. However, a venue large enough to handle a crowd in excess of 1,000 seemed to be nonexistent in the SCV this year.

Ronda Chobanian, development director of the Boys & Girls Club of SCV, said Donohoe pulled off a near last-minute miracle by obtaining the use of a building in the Gateway Promenade shopping center at 28776 The Old Road.

The location is on The Old Road almost to the 126 (next to the CHP station).

'Tis the season...

The Child & Family Center's 14th annual Golf Invitational "Tee It Up Fore the Kids" will be held on June 4 at Robinson Ranch Golf Course. Cost: $250 per player. Contact Chairman Chris Chegwin at 661-644-6058 (cell) for additional information.

The Summer Showdown at TPC will be held June 18 at the Tournament Players Club Valencia. The event benefits the SCV Senior Center Foundation. Contact or

Dancing in the streets
I understand that the major sponsor of the annual summer series of concerts held adjacent to the Hyatt Regency Valencia has unexpectedly dropped out, putting the entire series in jeopardy. This cherished tradition in the SCV has raised thousands of dollars for SCV nonprofits and provided thousands of SCV residents with a fun way to spend a Friday night. If you can help, email

Special Olympics Spirit
Signal Executive Editor Jason Schaff and I spent a shift presenting medals to Special Olympics athletes at the annual Spirit Games held throughout the SCV on Saturday. It was a very rewarding experience to see the joy and exuberance of the athletes as they took their positions on the awards podium to receive their medals.
