The number of Santa Clarita representatives heading to Omaha, Neb. from June 25 to July 2 for the 2012 Olympic Team Trials grew again this week.

Hart sophomore Matt Johnson qualified on Saturday in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 15 minutes, 51.22 seconds at the Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine.
His time was about two seconds under the cut time of 15:53.59.

"Before the race, I had to stay confident because I hadn’t had a great couple meets before that swim going into it," Johnson said. "I was tapered and ready to swim fast and that’s the mentality I had to keep going into it.

"That meet was basically my last chance (to qualify) and if I didn’t get it there, I wasn’t going," Johnson said. "So that was definitely motivation."

Johnson will join former Foothill League swimmers Bob Hwang (Valencia), Riley Mita (West Ranch), Nick Korth (Hart), Konrad Antoniuk (Hart), Jordan Danny (Hart), Anthony Ervin (Hart) and Michelle Duraj (Golden Valley), and current Saugus swimmer Abbey Weitzeil at the trials.
