LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County public health officials have hit the city of Los Angeles with health code violations for hazardous conditions on Skid Row, including dozens of rats' nests, hypodermic needles and piles of human excrement on sidewalks.

The violations stem from an extensive health department inspection in April of the 10-block area of downtown Los Angeles that houses the nation's densest population of homeless people.

The May 21 report to the city attorney's office said that other unhygienic conditions included people living in tents on sidewalks, some with animals, and extensive trash on the street.

The report said the risk for communicable disease was high.

The city attorney's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The city has until this week to correct the violations.
