The 2012 season was one defined by youth in both boys and girls Foothill League swimming. With freshmen like Saugus’ Abbey Weitzeil and Hart’s Mik Ranslem and Tamara Santoyo dominating on the girls side, the boys side featured skilled swimmers of its own.

Sophomore Johnson and freshman Cole Cogswell teamed with older brothers Mitch Johnson and Chris Cogswell to help Hart run away with its 17th straight Foothill League title.

But for all the skill, it was the younger Johnson that stands out from the pack.

The sophomore was one of just two boys swimmers, along with Saugus’ Jonathan Morsch, to win two individual Foothill League titles when he took home the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle races.

In the final race of the day, Johnson paired with the Cogswell brothers and older brother Mitch to win his third league title of the meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

His success continued when he arrived at the CIF-Southern Section Division I finals meet, as Johnson swam a 4:36.63 in the 500-yard race to finish 10th overall in one of the nation’s top high school divisions.

Johnson added an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard relay with teammates Mitch Johnson and both Cogswell brothers, and as part of Hart’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, along with Kevin Moore, Griffin Scott and Naphong Aneksirikul, Johnson earned a 19th-place finish.

And even more impressive than his high school accomplishments, are that they came during a season in which he was training hard to achieve a USA Swim Olympic Team Trials cut time.

A time which he did indeed eclipse, when he placed fourth in the Speedo Grand Challenge in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 15 minutes, 51.22 seconds in Irvine earlier this month.

In a season defined by youth — Johnson is proof that the Foothill League’s reputation for talent won’t change anytime soon.

And for that, he is The Signal’s 2012 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Swimmer of the Year.

Johnson's Season
- Won two individual and one relay title at the Foothill League final meet.

- Was a key piece of the Hart boys 17th consecutive Foothill League title.

- Placed 10th in CIF-Southern Section Division I in the 500-yard freestyle.
