Letter: A lawless president?

“Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation: ‘I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States. ...’” — U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1.

The president is constitutionally mandated, and swears to, enforce laws as passed by Congress.

As to “lawless”: after election, President Obama refused to prosecute the Black Panthers for voter intimidation; you may have seen the video of these thugs armed with clubs intimidating whites from entering the polling place. Despite the fact that they had pled guilty, Justice dropped the charges.

Obama refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by Clinton.

Obama refused to defend “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” passed by Congress and signed into law by Clinton.

Now Obama’s gone a step farther; he’s actually written an amnesty law obliterating laws passed and signed. This revives the notion of “nullification” embraced by President Jackson. (The Supreme Court had ruled that Jackson’s seizure of Indian lands was unconstitutional; Jackson replied, “Justice Marshall has made his ruling, now let him enforce it.” The seizures continued, leading to the Trail of Tears.)

So where are our Democrat friends decrying this lawlessness? Are their letters in the mail? If not, I would remind them that President Romney will be elected in five months.

He may well say, “You know, those EPA rules have been seriously harming the economy, so we’re going to rewrite them.” The same with OSHA. The same with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

If you Democrats are going to establish precedents, be prepared to live with the consequences.

“Take but degree away, untune that string, and hark what discord follows.” — Shakespeare.
