With more than two decades of experience with the YMCA, Gwen Bagley, the new executive director for its local chapter, brings an energy to the job that has been with her for awhile, she said Wednesday.

“I actually started my YMCA career straight out of high school as a day-camp counselor,” she said. “I realized in college that the YMCA was really my passion.”

Bagley grew up in Mililani, Hawaii, and said the Santa Clarita Valley reminds her of her hometown.

“It had a close community feel. It’s very safe, and it just has that small-town feel,” she said.

Bagley may be relatively new to the position, but she’s already established definite goals for the SCV Family YMCA.

“There’s just a high opportunity and need for us here to serve our families and senior adults,” she said. “And, we’ll continue to grow our local programs to support sports, youth activities and healthy lifestyle choices.”

Prior to taking the executive director position, Bagley was CEO of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA in Covington, Va.

Bagley and her husband, Richard Bagley, moved to California to be closer to relatives in the state and Hawaii.

“It’s a lot easier to be closer to relatives in Hawaii when you’re on the West Coast,” she said.

The couple live in Upland but plan a move to the Santa Clarita Valley soon, Bagley said.

As executive director, Bagley manages day-to-day operations for the SCV Family YMCA and works with volunteers to “create partnership in the community to serve as many people as we can,” she said.

Bagley also served as vice president of the Orange County YMCA Childcare Service and as COO for the Georgia Mountains YMCA in Gainesville, Ga., she said.
