Details were emerging Sunday in the motorcycle crash that killed a 26-year-old Canyon Country man Friday night.

Steven Edward Kokkila, of Evi Lane behind Jakes Way, crashed just moments after an exchange with a motorist, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said Sunday.

"The victim was apparently northbound on Sierra Highway when he stopped for a red light at Linda Vista Street," said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie, reading from the coroner's report.

"It appears he accidently struck the (side) mirror of the motorist's vehicle with his handlebars," she said. "The driver then rolled down the window and said they should pull over and exchange information.

"The decedent then gave a thumbs up sign. But, then the light turned green and he rapidly accelerated at a high rate of speed and subsequently lost control," MacWillie said, referring to the report.

"The decedent struck at the center median and was ejected from the motorcycle," she said. "He struck several small trees and came to rest on the south side of Sierra Highway."

A 911 call was placed by "a witness" at 10:09 p.m., she said.

Kokkila was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be done on the man's body Monday morning.

Detective Jeff Maag, investigating the collision, is urging anyone who witnessed the crash to call him at 661-799-5111.

Kokkila, who lived for a while in Stevenson Ranch and in Westridge on Silver Aspen Way, was born in Hennepin County, Minn.

He is survived by his father, Edward Thomas Kokkila, and his mother, Sandra Lee Pearson.
