Fireworks: They’re neither safe nor sane, local officials say

Fireworks are illegal in Santa Clarita and in unincorporated areas surrounding the city, officials said Friday as the Fourth of July holiday approaches.

One fire this week may have been caused by use of illegal fireworks: a blaze touched off under the Newhall Ranch Road bridge that spans San Francisquito Creek on Tuesday burned an acre of brush and forced closure of the bridge before it was doused.

A fire official said fireworks were a likely cause.

That’s exactly why Santa Clarita doesn’t join some of the nearby cities that sell so-called Safe and Sane fireworks, said spokeswoman Gail Ortiz.

When living in a high-fire-hazard area such as the Santa Clarita Valley, only professional fireworks are actually sane, officials agree.

Safe and Sane fireworks are illegal throughout Los Angeles County’s unincorporated areas, a county Fire Department spokesman said.

Individual cities in the county can make the decision to sell fireworks, he said, but if fireworks are purchased legally in one city, they cannot be used in another city that does not allow them.

All fireworks are illegal in the Angeles National Forest year around, a U.S. Forest Service news release said. Fire danger is currently high in the national forest.

Fire Department officials encourage Santa Clarita Valley residents to celebrate the Fourth of July by watching a professional fireworks show:

n Friends of Castaic Lake is hosting a fireworks show on the lake at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

n The city of Santa Clarita is hosting a show at the Westfield Valencia Town Center at 9:15 p.m.

n The Stevenson Ranch Euclid Management Company is hosting a 9 p.m. show at the Dr. Richard Rioux Memorial Park at 26233 Faulkner Drive.
