Santa Clarita Rotary Club
Pancake Breakfast
What: The breakfast, at $4, includes pancakes or blueberry pancakes, sausages, orange juice and coffee. This year the menu includes grits and molasses as well. There will be live classic rock and roll music by J.C. Burnett.
Where: Held in Newhall at the Roger Dunn Golf parking lot on Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets

Independence Day Classic Run
What: Presented by the Santa Clarita Runners, as always there will be a 5K race, and a non-competitive walk, as well as a Kiddie K. The races will benefit the high school cross country programs in the SCV. Register early as there are a limited supply of technical shirts and goody bags for 5K and 10K participants. Kids K participants receive a finishing medal.

When: 10K begins at 7 a.m., Kiddie K starts at 7:45 a.m., 5K and walk start at 8 a.m.

Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade
What: Jim and Bobby Stone, 40-year parade volunteers will be grand marshals of this year’s parade (with the theme of Santa Clarita volunteers). As always, the parade will be loaded with horses, floats, music, fire trucks, kids, cars, military and more.
Where: Parade runs north along Main Street (formerly San Fernando Road) from 5th Street to Lyons Avenue, turns west on Lyons and then north onto Orchard Village Road, ending at 16th Street. (Note: Street closures begin at 7 a.m. – Main Street both directions from Pine Street to Lyons Avenue; Lyons both directions from Main Street to Orchard Village Road; Orchard Village both directions from Lyons to 16th Street; 16th Street.)
When: Parade begins at 9 a.m.

Castaic Lake 4th of July
What: Enjoy the lake and recreation area all day for $25 per carload or $5 per person walk-in (5 years and under free) — followed by music and fireworks. There will be water slides and jumpers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Soakfest 2012

What: Free event with 10,000 water balloons for age and size appropriate battles, water slide, slip and slide, watermelon eating contest, free hot dogs

Today’s Highlight in History: On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

Ten years ago: A gunman opened fire at Israel’s El Al ticket counter at Los Angeles International Airport, killing two people; gunman Hesham Mohamed Hadayet was shot dead by an El Al guard. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., leader of the famed all-black Tuskegee Airmen during World War II and the first black general in the Air Force, died in Washington D.C. at age 89. Winnifred Quick Van Tongerloo, a survivor of the Titanic sinking, died in East Lansing, Mich., at age 98.

Five years ago: BBC reporter Alan Johnston, seized by the Army of Islam in the Gaza Strip the previous March, was released. The head of the radical-held Red Mosque (Maulana Abdul Aziz) in Islamabad, Pakistan, was caught by security forces. (He was released on bail in April 2009.) The Black Sea resort of Sochi was elected the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics, taking the Winter Games to Russia for the first time. Bill Pinkney, the last survivor of the original members of the musical group The Drifters, died in Daytona Beach, Fla., at age 81.

One year ago: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez made a surprise return to his country after undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba. Otto von Hapsburg, 98, the oldest son of Austria’s last emperor and longtime head of one of Europe’s most influential families, died in Poecking, Germany.
