A glimmer of hope

As I survey the wreckage of the last election, I am reminded of other great disasters: Hurricane Katrina, local wildfires, the Northridge earthquake, or Gary Horton's most recent column reporting on last Thursday's meeting of the Friends of Fidel Coffee Klatch at Starbucks.

We are seemingly deluged with bad news from all sides. Today seems to be dominated by the pessimists and the "nattering nabobs of negativity."

Then something happens to change all of that. Just when I think the Republican Party is finished and modern conservatism is dead, events occur that show the Dems are just as corrupt as ever - and hope remains.

Illinois Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested last Tuesday on charges that he attempted to sell the vacant senatorial seat of President-elect Barack Obama.

Initial reports say that Blagojevich was attempting to trade the seat for a $150,000-a-year board member job for his wife.

What a great Christmas present! Usually guys give their wives soap-on-a-rope, slippers or the ever-popular toaster oven. Not Gov. Rod. He's giving her a six-figure job that requires only a few hours of labor every year.

I was thinking that I would put together a package for Rod and see if he would go for it. I'll put in the green Honda (slightly used), a putter that has several bend/straighten marks and a Steve Garvey rookie card.

If he drives a hard bargain, I've got a roll of uncirculated 1979 Susan B. Anthonys to throw in.

But, unfortunately, the FBI got to him before I could tender my offer.

Blagojevich was also accused of several other crimes including extorting money out of companies trying to do business in Illinois, hiring fraud and influence peddling.

It's also very interesting that one of the big fundraisers for Blagojevich was a fellow named Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who is awaiting sentencing on fraud and other charges. Remember him? He was also a fundraiser for our new President-elect.

Quite a coincidence, isn't it? A dirty governor selling Obama's seat who was also aided by the same money-guy as Obama. Ah, that old familiar stench of Democratic shenanigans is returning.

Mark my words, this will be the first of many scandals and dirty deeds that will mar the presidency of Mr. Obama.

And the news just gets better.

Obama is now in trouble with the extreme left over his choice of cabinet appointments. Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America, said "he has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right Cabinet.

"But we do hope that before it's all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment."

Hilary Clinton? Rahm Emanuel? The left thinks these are centrist-to-right people? I cannot even begin to imagine who Carpenter believes would be reasonable progressive choices. Lenin? Stalin?

Obama is also being accused of backsliding on his campaign promises. Throughout his travels, Obama worked crowds into a frenzy by claiming he would tax the windfall profits of oil companies.

Now Obama says he won't enact the tax. Ooops.

Obama pledged to repeal the Bush tax cuts and give the money to the middle class. Now Obama says that he will simply let the cuts for people making over $250K expire at the end of 2010.

Obama made significant political hay by voicing his opposition to the war and promising to begin to end the war on his first day in office.

On "Meet the Press" recently, he said he would begin "to design a plan for a responsible drawdown." Not exactly the immediate withdrawal that the left had hoped for.

The biggest contradiction was the appointment of the man who made the war winnable, Bush's Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The clouds are forming around the Obama presidency and he hasn't even taken the oath of office! And the cloud-makers are coming from within the Democratic Party and more potential scandals that are looming.

As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, the Democratic Party will show itself to be as dishonest, disjointed, fractious and corrupt as ever, with their patron saint Obama in charge.

The impending rise of a new Republican Party is beginning already - a party that is in the process of purging itself and creating a new shining path for America.
