The Pac-12 cross country championships will be held right here in the Santa Clarita Valley this fall.

Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Canyon Country is hosting this year’s Pac-12 Preview on Sept. 21 and the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 27.

This will mark the first time the SCV will host the finals in the history of the conference, according to the conference’s record books.

“It’s a big deal,” said Paul Broneer, Canyon High cross country and track and field head coach. “I’ve been to that race several times. I’ve been to it when different schools have hosted it. In the past, when UCLA has hosted it, they’ve had it at the Rose Bowl.”

UCLA is hosting the meet this year, but opted to go with the more hilly, demanding terrain at Robinson Ranch compared to the relatively flat area near the Rose Bowl.

The race will also be the first cross country conference championship ever televised, the Pac-12 Network announced in June.

Broneer said it’s the biggest event this valley has ever seen in the sport.

“It’s a perfect place to have a cross country meet,” he said.

The meet will include a host a local running products, including Saugus graduates Merissa Kado and Amber Murakami, who run for UCLA along with teammate and West Ranch graduate Jennifer Owen.

Another Saugus graduate, Stephanie Bulder, will be a sophomore runner at Arizona next year.

Recent Golden Valley graduates Kristian Martinez and Juan David Garcia are committed to the University of California, Berkeley cross country team, and may also take part in the Pac-12 Championships.
