MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — A Central Valley mother charged in the killing of her young daughter remains behind bars after making her first court appearance.

Officials say Brandy Lee Rose Devine, who was arrested Monday in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder, child abuse and possession of methamphetamine.

Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager says Devine was ordered to return to court Sept. 7 for a pretrial hearing. Her bail was set at $1 million.

The 25-year-old Devine was arrested after police were called to her home in Turlock around 12:30 p.m. Monday and found the little girl dead. Police say three other young children who were in the home at the time— a 4-year-old girl, a 6-year-old girl and an infant boy — have been placed in the care of child protective services.
