Letter: A parent’s worst nightmare

My life changed forever July 12, by the worst kind of tragedy. I viewed in horror as the parents of a teenager learned that their only child was dead.
No parent should have to experience what I saw that day. The emotions were raw and gut-wrenching and went on for hours as family members congregated and were told of the tragedy.
Classmates and friends began gathering at the residence. You could see that they were all totally oblivious to the fact that it could have been one of them.
Parents, please ask questions, know where your child is at all times and know who their friends are. Most of all, talk to your children and keep communication open. Lastly, hug your children, as I did last night.
Wake up, parents — tomorrow, it could be you screaming hysterically as your child’s body is taken away by the coroner. These parents no longer have a child to hug.
I was an unwilling witness to the most excruciating, horrendous experience a parent should never have to endure. I will never be the same. The parents will never know life the same. Their lives are shattered forever. Their child is gone forever.
