It’s been a strange summer in the Santa Clarita Valley, humid, hot, cold, rain, hot. However, not as strange as my friends from Pasco, Wash. have reported. Chris and Kevin Dougherty tell me there has been eight consecutive nights of thunder and lightening in the Tri-Cities. That’s extremely unusual for that area.

Talley wine tasting

Carl and Terry Kanowsky will host a tasting of Talley wines at Salt Creek Grille on Thursday Aug. 23. The event will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.

Tasting and hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Salt Creek Grille, paired by the talented Tamra Levine, of Salt Creek Grille Catering. The event isn’t a dinner, but rather a fun evening of tasting and snacking (stay for dinner at Salt Creek afterwards). Talley’s winemaker, Eric Johnson, (who I understand is young, handsome and enthusiastic, as well as knowledgeable) will lead the tasting. Tickets are $75 in advance and $90 at the door. Benefit for Painted Turtle

The Painted Turtle will welcome more than 2,000 children with serious medical conditions and their families to camp sessions during the summer and weekends throughout the winter, spring, and fall.

The camp will also bring its programs to another 2,000 children in hospitals located throughout California through its hospital outreach program, The Painted Turtle Outpost. The camp is located in the Angeles National Forest, nestled between the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys.

Community members are invited to attend the eighth annual event to benefit The Painted Turtle, hosted by the North Los Angeles County Regional Advisory Board. Turtle Greek Island Barbecue will be held Saturday, July 28, at 5 p.m. at the Painted Turtle Camp in Lake Hughes. Activities will include camp tours, wine tasting, a car show and live entertainment. Silent and live auctions for sporting events, trips, jewelry and other items.

Proceeds will benefit The Painted Turtle’s programs for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

‘The Producers’

If you’re looking for “stuff to do” you can’t beat seeing a Broadway show under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. “The Producers” — very possibility the funniest show ever staged — will run for only three performances, July 27-20.

The cast is amazing, with Richard Kind as Max Bialystock, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Leo Bloom, Roger Bart as Carmen Ghia, Gary Beach as Roger De Bris, Dane Cook as Franz Liebkind, and Rebecca Romijn as Ulla. Susan Stroman, winner of the Tony Award for both direction and choreography for the original Broadway stage musical of “The Producers,” will direct and choreograph the fully staged production.

I’d say this is the “can’t-miss” production for Los Angeles theater this summer. Tickets are available in person at the Hollywood Bowl box office, by calling 323-850-2000 and at

‘Marvelous Wonderettes’

A little closer to home “The Marvelous Wonderettes” opens July 28 at 8 p.m., and runs through Sept. 2, at the Canyon Theatre Guild in downtown Newhall.

The show will also feature matinees on Sundays at 2 p.m. This is your chance to take a nostalgic musical journey back to the 1950s and 1960s, featuring four-part harmonies on such hits as “Lollipop,” “Mr. Sandman,” “It’s My Party,” “Leader of the Pack,” “Son of a Preacherman” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” Betty Jean is played by the very talented Marie Wise-Hawkins, Courtney Potter plays Missy, Sarah Lang is Suzie, and Catherine Birdsong is Cyndi Lou. Join these great singers at “their” Class of 1958 prom and their high school reunion several years later. Call the CTG Box Office at 661-799-2702 for tickets.
