Both remaining Foothill League schools in the Valley Invitational Baseball League are advancing to the semifinals of its playoffs.

In the VIBL quarterfinals, Saugus defeated Harvard-Westlake 6-3 at Harvard Westlake, while Valencia beat Woodland Hills 10-0 at Woodland Hills.

The Centurions started knuckleball pitcher Luke Hovey, who allowed just one run in 4 2/3 innings while striking out two.

Roy Verdejo also pitched well for Saugus. Verdejo struck out three and allowed two unearned runs in his 2 1/3 innings on the mound.

Saugus scored twice in the second after Jonah Kapp knocked in Ruben Cardenas with a two-out RBI double and Caden Salkeld scored on an error by Harvard-Westlake.

Dylan Freyre added another run in the fourth with an RBI single to knock in Timmy Kahovec.

Led by Salkeld, Kapp, and Aguilar, the Centurions put the game away by scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth.

“We got great production from the very top and bottom of the order,” said Saugus head coach John Maggiora.

Salkeld went 2-for-3, while Kapp went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Aguilar reached base five times in the game as he went 3-for-4 with a walk.

As for Valencia, starting pitcher Holden Mehr threw 75 pitches in his complete-game shutout to help the Vikings advance. Mehr struck out three batters and walked none in the game.

“Holden kept us in the game today,” said Valencia head coach Jared Snyder. “He pretty much dominated the strikezone. We also played very good defense and didn’t commit an error all day.”

A.J. Balta and Keston Hiura provided the power for the Vikings as they hit a two-run home run and a three-run home run, respectively.

Balta’s homer was his only hit in three at-bats on the day, while Hiura finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Anthony Lepre went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Shane Lindenman added an RBI double and finished the game 1-for-2 for Valencia.

Saugus and Valencia will both be in action again on Friday.

The Vikings play the winner of Valley North and Rojos while the Centurions play Loyola at home.
