SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A former longtime Shasta County judge will become the new administrator of California's courts.

The Judicial Council of California on Friday unanimously voted Steven Jahr as the state's next Administrative Director of the Courts. Jahr who was a judge in Shasta County for 22 years will be the state's first chief administrator with judicial experience.

Jahr, who becomes the state's fifth such director since the office was created in 1960, replaces William Vickrey who retired last year amid mounting criticism of the office's handling of a costly digital computer system.

Two lawmakers called for Vickrey's dismissal after the state auditor concluded the office mismanaged the cost of the system from an estimated $260 million to $1.9 billion and delayed its deployment.

Judge Jahr will assume his new post in October.
