Vending more than a soda

“Art to Go” machine to be set up Thursday in downtown Newhall

While most people have at one time purchased snacks and drinks from vending machines, most Santa Clarita residents have probably never purchased a piece of original artwork from one.

Starting Thursday, Santa Clarita residents will be able to do exactly that, as the city of Santa Clarita unveils its new “Art to Go” machine during Thursday’s Art Walk in downtown Newhall.

The vending machine dispenses original pieces of art by local artists, said Arts and Events Supervisor Jeff Barber.

“It’s basically an old-fashioned vending machine,” Barber said. “You put in your $10 and then your art drops down into the tray and you pick it up.”

The vending machine will have small pieces of unique and original art, including oil pieces, origami, tile work, mixed media and photography, Barber said. Each piece costs $10 and the proceeds will go to benefit city-run local arts education programs.

The art is packaged and also includes information about the artist who created the piece, Barber said.

The vending machine will have 100 pieces total for Thursday’s event; 10 artists donated 10 pieces each, Barber said. The artists were challenged to create the works on such a small medium, but Barber said it would be worthwhile because of the donations that will be used for art education.

The machine will debut Thursday night at Art Walk in downtown Newhall — held on Main Street and Eighth Street from 4-8 p.m. The machine will be in front of the Canyon Theatre Guild at 24242 Main St.

The city is planning to move the machine around to different city-run events so that people will be able to purchase the art, Barber said.

“Hopefully it’ll become very popular and people will want to start their own art collection,” Barber said.
