LA PUENTE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have taken into custody a carjacking suspect who shot at pursuing officers before surrendering on a Southern California freeway.

California Highway Patrol Officer Christian Cracraft said bullets struck two CHP patrol cars but no officers were hurt in Saturday afternoon's shooting on State Route 60 in La Puente.

KABC-TV reports that the chase began in Riverside County when authorities spotted a Range Rover matching the description of a carjacked vehicle. The driver fled westbound and led police on a chase that stopped when the car ran out of gas.

Cracraft said the driver fired at the patrol cars when he passed them on the shoulder, then gave up after a brief standoff.

Officers shut down all westbound lanes of the freeway to investigate, causing traffic to back up for miles.

The gunman's name was not immediately released.
