SAN FERNANDO — Arraignment was continued until Aug. 20 today for two Canyon Country men charged with murder in the street-racing death of a friend last January.

Colt Sean Doherty, 19, and Thomas Joseph Vensko, 20, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court and agreed to have their arraignment continued. Both are charged with one count of second-degree murder after Dakota Demott, 19, was thrown from Doherty’s Ford Mustang in a crash during an apparent street race on Sand Canyon Road.

Friends and family members, including the family of Doherty and Demott, made up about half the audience in Department S, where the hearing took place. Some cried when Doherty and Vensko appeared in court.

Doherty wore a blue jumpsuit and glasses and Vensko wore a white shirt. Both had short-cropped hair.

The prosecutor for the case walked back to the audience and asked Demott’s family members if they agreed with the continued arraignment date.

Bail for Doherty and Vensko had been set at $1 million. If convicted, they could face life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Doherty was also charged with one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury. Vensko was also charged with vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of the crime.

Demott died when Doherty’s Mustang hit a tree on Sand Canyon Road at Alamo Canyon Road in Canyon Country shortly after 11 p.m. on January 10. Doherty and Vensko started street racing after leaving a fast-food restaurant.
