Foothill League schools had another strong showing at the second day of the Foothill Invitational on Saturday.

The day started with the completion of pool play and continued with single-elimination Challenge Matches.

“Each team has been guaranteed eight games,” said Los Angeles Volleyball Academy Director of Development Trevor Julian. “The format of the tournament has given coaches a chance to put players in different lineups as well as positions.”

Performance in pool play determined the seeding for the Challenge Matches.

Challenge Match winners move into Sunday’s Gold Bracket, while losers will compete in the Silver Bracket.

Both Saugus and Valencia were victorious in Challenge Matches on Saturday, as the Centurions beat West Ranch and the Vikings defeated Taft of Woodland Hills.

“We’ve been able to put something together even with having a different lineup for every match,” said Saugus head coach Zach Ambrose. “The tournament is giving me the chance to look at all 12 of my players.”

The Centurions’ victory over West Ranch was a battle throughout.

As one team extended a lead, the opposition quickly countered to stay within reach.

West Ranch tied the score at 18 in the first game, but Saugus scored seven of the next ten points to pull away and take the game 25-21.

The Wildcats controlled the second game and won 25-17 to tie the match at one game apiece.

Ultimately, Saugus advanced past the Wildcats as they took a back-and-forth third game to win 15-13.

“I was impressed by our players’ ability to listen to the things we’re teaching and apply them in the game,” said West Ranch head coach Gerrit Maxwell. As for Valencia, the Vikings beat Taft in straight games by scores of 25-21 and 25-17.

Saugus will meet Chaparral while Valencia will take on Louisville in the first-round of the Gold Bracket playoffs Sunday.

The tournament started Friday and will end today.

“Overall, we’ve been very pleased by the tournament so far,” Julian said. “The feedback has been very positive and we hope we can continue to grow in years to come.”
