Thieves stole rent money from three Santa Clarita Valley residents in separate incidents last week, local sheriff’s deputies report.

On three separate occasions, deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were called to apartment complexes for reports that rent checks in the form of money orders had been stolen and cashed.

In each case, deputies labeled the crimes grand theft.

On Aug. 2, they received a report from a tenant at Canyon Crest Apartments on Newhall Avenue in Newhall.

The man told deputies that an envelope containing three money orders totaling $1,345.07 was stolen and cashed after he had dropped the envelope off as rent payment in the apartment complex’s leasing office.

Four days later, deputies were again called for claims that rent money in the form of money orders had been stolen.

Sometime between 6 a.m. on Aug. 6 and 10 p.m. that day, someone had taken three money orders totalling $1,181.06 had been stolen.

According to deputies responding the complaint, the victim “stated he placed three money order checks inside the apartment’s check drop box on Aug. 2.

“He was notified by management that the check drop-off box was compromised and his checks for rent were stolen.”

Deputies mentioned in their report that the checks were cashed by an unknown person.

In a third incident involving money orders, deputies said that between 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and 10 a.m. Thursday, thieves stole rent money checks from Meadowridge Drive in Newhall.

A woman described in their report as a “housewife” received a phone call from MoneyGram informing her that her stolen money orders totaling $1,332 had been cashed by someone “other than Meadowridge Apartments,” deputies wrote in their report.

The woman gave deputies a photocopy of her money order receipts.

No one has been arrested for the crimes.
