Letter: ‘Straight talk from a CEO’ — seriously?

I just finished reading Tom Santos’ Aug. 9 column. Talk about painting with a broad brush (more like a wide roller)! This is the same guy that blogs that all conservatives hate the Volt.

I am a real CEO who has taken a company from a few employees working out of a home office into a team of 40 that’s already outgrown our 5,000-square-foot facility. While there is no question that there are CEOs out there that Santos’ description aptly fits, it certainly does not apply across the board as he implies.

My partner and I have built a company in the worst economy in our lifetimes, with no government assistance and without even being able to get a loan from a bank. We have trashed our credit by over extending on credit cards and working two years without a paycheck. Yet, we pay our team members (we don’t have employees in our company) much higher than what we have to, considering there is an abundance of qualified people currently available.

We stress over not yet being able to provide health insurance and will continue to take our modest salaries and drive older cars until we can. Neither of us is driven by greed, finding much more satisfaction in the fact that we are providing a living for people that might otherwise be unemployed. Having team members thank you for providing work for them and telling you that they continue to pray for you daily is far more satisfying than a big check.

Santos did get a few things right. I am a service provider, a profit generator and a cost eliminator. If I were not, nobody would have a job in our company.
