A Santa Clarita man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a woman in Canyon Country on Saturday morning, sheriff’s officials said.

The 19-year-old victim awoke at 5:50 a.m. to noises at her home on the 27500 block of Sierra Highway, according to a statement released by the Special Victims Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

She found a man standing in her living room. When she told him to leave, he punched her in the face, placed her in a bear hug and told her he was going to rape her, according to the statement.

As the man dragged her towards her bedroom, she began fighting back and screamed for help. The startled suspect released his hold and the victim was able to run out of her apartment and call for help, the statement said.

The suspect escaped before deputies arrived, but they were able to identify, locate and arrest the suspect in Saugus without incident.

Adan Martinez, 34, of Santa Clarita, was booked at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on charges of attempted rape and burglary, with bail set at $100,000, according to the statement.

The woman sustained minor injuries, and was treated and released from a local hospital.
