A 21-year-old woman identified as a passenger in a convertible sports car that crashed outside Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital early Sunday is dead while the driver remains in critical condition, officials said.

The woman has been identified as Tugba Elbirlik, of Valencia, according to Lt. Joe Bale of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

The identity of the man, who appears to be in his early 20s, has not been released.

Bale said relatives of Elbirlik’s family were reached Sunday with news of her death.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a crash occurred on McBean Parkway, just south of Avenida Navarre in Valencia, near the hospital, said Traffic Branch Sgt. Rich Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Preliminary information indicates the sports car was traveling northbound on McBean Parkway, when it lost control and crashed in the center median, Cohen said.

The sports car — a blue Mazda Miata — came to rest after it hit two trees.

Occupants of the car — a man and a woman — were taken across the street to the hospital where they were listed in critical condition.

Paramedics of the Los Angeles County Fire Department fitted the injured man with a neck brace and placed him on a stretcher.

Shortly after 6 a.m., Cohen released an update on the condition of the injured couple with news that one of them had died.

“Preliminary indications are that the driver apparently lost control and hit a tree,” Bale said.

“The deceased was a passenger who was ejected (from the car.)”

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation and any witnesses to the collision are urged to contact Detective Jeff Maag at 661-799-5112.
