Happy New Year and here's hoping for a fine 2009.

Only three more days in 2008 - and I'm looking forward to 2009.

Let's hope it will be a kinder year than most of the experts predict.

To help you plan your 2009 social and event life here's the first part of our early 2009 clip-and-save calender.

Jan. 24
The Santa Clarita Elks Lodge, 17766 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country, will roast Carl Goldman, 5:30 p.m. cocktails, 7 p.m. roast, to benefit the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers.

Tickets are available for $200 per individual or for varying levels by table of 10.

Feb. 13
Be transported to a "Romantic Evening in Paris" from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Sweetheart Gala.

A beautiful evening is planned where friends can simply enjoy the evening without the pressures of auctions and raffles.

This year, philanthropist Roberta Veloz is the special title sponsor; the 2009 sweetheart couple will be Dale and Tamara Donohoe.

Fun, dinner and dance the night away with Crush.

Feb. 20
The annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner will benefit the Respite Adult Day Care program and other services offered by the SCV Senior Center. This year's theme is "out of this world!" Info: (661) 288-0186 or (661) 259-0033, ext. 227.

Feb. 21
The Amgen Tour of California will bring the world's top professional bicycle teams to Santa Clarita. The city will host the start-line of Stage 7 from Santa Clarita to Pasadena.

Feb. 28
A Night at the Coconut Grove, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with Soroptimist International of Greater SCV, will be held at the Hyatt Valencia.

The College of the Canyons Foundation Annual Silver Spur event, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. will honor Harold and Jacquie Petersen.

March 28
SCV Zonta's Women in Service Celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Women nominated by community nonprofit agencies will be honored for their service to the community.

The top volunteer will receive the Carmen Sarro Community Service Award. To be held at Robinson Ranch, 27734 Sand Canyon Road, Canyon Country.
