LOS ANGELES (AP) — A gunshot from an apartment complex led to the evacuation of homes and business in Hollywood on Monday after a search uncovered weapons and possible explosives, though most turned out to be fakes.

Construction workers on Sunset Boulevard reported the shot, which hit no one, fired from a third-floor apartment at about 3:30 p.m. Police cordoned off an area of about two square blocks while they searched for the shooter, Los Angeles police spokesman Rudy Lopez said.

The suspected gunman, who is in his 20s, was arrested about 90 minutes later and the incident appeared to be over, but officers searching his apartment found a sawed-off shotgun and what appeared to be another gun and a stick of dynamite. That brought out a bomb squad and prompted street closures and the evacuation of many surrounding homes and businesses.

Investigators believe the gunshot came from the sawed-off shotgun, but the second gun and stick of dynamite turned out to be replicas similar to movie props, Lopez said. There were no injuries.

It was unlikely that the suspected shooter, who had a police record, intended to harm anyone, Lopez said.

"Based on his intoxicated state, I think he just got drunk and perhaps wasn't using the best sense at that time," Lopez said. "I don't think he wanted to shoot anybody."
