4 dead, 5 injured in SD County rural highway wreck

RAMONA, Calif. (AP) — Two children and two adults have been killed in a head-on collision on a rural highway east of Ramona in San Diego County.

California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings says four children and a 67-year-old woman were hurt in the crash at 3:17 p.m. Tuesday.

The 33-year-old drivers of a minivan and a sedan were both killed after their vehicles collided on Highway 78.

Two girls, ages 8 and 9, were also killed.

Pennings says the 67-year-old woman and a 6-year-old girl sustained major injuries, while a 3-year-old boy, an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

The highway was closed for about an hour in both directions after the accident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. The identity of the victims has not been released.
